Mary Koch

Mary is a tenacious crusader for the rights of injured victims and their families.  Her proven record shows she will fight relentlessly for Justice.

Career Highlights

In 2014, Ms. Koch led the team that successfully negotiated the historic $37 million settlement against St. Joseph Medical Center on behalf of former patients of Dr. Mark Midei, a cardiologist at the hospital who was accused of performing hundreds of unnecessary cardiac stent procedures. Ms. Koch made the successful class action argument which helped to obtain full justice for the patients, and closure for the families so they could resume their lives. The settlement helped establish a national dialogue on unnecessary medical procedures. Contact: Mary@birthinjurymedicalmalpractice.com

In 2010, Mary orchestrated a $34.33 million verdict (one of the nation’s top ten largest that year) in Wynn et. al. v. MJ Harbor Hotel, LLC—a case that brought the Baltimore-based hotel management group to justice after Ruth Chris’ Steakhouse employees fell sick from carbon monoxide poisoning. Her fearless cross-examination of hotel employees provided the court with vital facts that led to this successful.

While an attorney in private practice elsewhere, Ms. Koch served a primary role in cases involving hundreds of private water wells contaminated by MTBE.

Early Years

After graduating from the University of Baltimore School of Law in 1988, Mary proceeded straight to the courtroom. Her first position was as an Assistant State’s Attorney in Baltimore City, where she was arguing her first case within days of being hired.

Mary has always preferred the prosecutor role in trial and, after serving as an attorney in the juvenile courts in Baltimore for three years working on homicide and narcotics casework, she transferred to felony courts in 1991. Her tenacious pursuit of justice led her to win over 100 felony jury trials, losing just one. Ms. Koch thrived in the courtroom and spent nearly every day in court. In 1997, she was designated as a Special Assistant United States Attorney.

Ms. Koch moved into the private sector as an attorney in 1999. During her ten-year tenure, she was a proactive litigator in complex mass tort and class action cases involving water contamination, pharmaceuticals, and asbestos.

Greatest Honor

The recognitions Ms. Koch receives from her clients are the most rewarding. “I can honestly say that every client I’ve worked with really appreciates the effort I put forth.”

When Ms. Koch was investigating cases of groundwater contamination, she spent her evenings in the living rooms of hundreds of Baltimore-area residents, providing them with extensive information and serving as a personal ally in their case against a corporate giant. Many of these individuals still thank her when they see her outside of the office.

Approaching 30 years now as an advocate for those harmed by the negligence of others, Ms. Koch takes great pride being able to apply the experience and trial skills she has acquired over the course of her career to help her clients achieve the best possible outcome.

Family

Ms. Koch lives with her husband, a retired police lieutenant, and four dogs in Harford County.
